In the few weeks since my mother passed away, I haven't known what to do with myself and so I've been cleaning her beautiful house: washing the windows, rubbing down the furniture with orange oil, refolding the linens in the closet, and washing the heavy layers of dust off precariously piled up plates and bowls and putting them back in neat little stacks that help put my mind back in order too.
I've done paintings of three of her china collections - Imari, Rose Canton, and French Faience - each it's own beautiful pottery traditions with coordinating patterns and traditional color palettes.
"La Palette de Rose Canton" is based on the colors found in Chinese Rose Canton and Rose Medallion porcelain, with it's delicate raised enamel glazes in botanical and butterfly patterns, sometimes with medallions opening onto Geisha scenes. Pink is the predominant color, contrasted with pale green, and accented by the deep rust red, bright pops of yellow, and hints of black.
