In the few weeks since my mother passed away, I haven't known what to do with myself and so I've been cleaning her beautiful house: washing the windows, rubbing down the furniture with orange oil, refolding the linens in the closet, and washing the heavy layers of dust off precariously piled up plates and bowls and putting them back in neat little stacks that help put my mind back in order too.
I've done paintings of three of her china collections - Imari, Rose Canton, and French Faience - each it's own beautiful pottery traditions with coordinating patterns and traditional color palettes.
"La Palette d'Imari" is based on the colors found in both Japanese Imari (largely made for the English market) and English Imari (made in England for the English market, and based on the original Japanese Imari). The colors are bold and striking but also rich and somehow soothing, with the a range of cobalt blues contrasting with the particular shade of rust red, offset by hints of yellow and green.
